Twin Cities drivers need to be careful about how much they drink over Thanksgiving.

First, that is because driving while intoxicated puts you at risk for hurting others or damaging property, and because there are very serious legal consequences to a DWI conviction.

Second, it is because law enforcement agencies throughout Minnesota are planning to step up their DWI enforcement efforts from now until shortly after Christmas.

According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Traffic Safety Office, the statewide DWI push will run from Nov. 29 until Dec. 28. During that period, officers will especially be looking out for drunk drivers on the following dates:

  • Nov. 29-30
  • Dec. 5-7
  • Dec. 12-14
  • Dec. 19-21
  • Dec. 26-28

Every year in Minnesota, around 30,000 drivers are arrested for DWI. Over the past three years, some 336 people have died as a result of drunk-driving crashes.

As we said at the beginning of the post, please be very, very careful when you’re drinking at holiday gatherings. It is too easy to have one more than you should and then make a very serious mistake on the way home. It is never a bad idea to ask for a ride from a friend or take a cab home. If you are on the fence that should be reason enough that it is not a very good idea to drive.
