MNsure, Minnesota’s agency for state-provided health insurance, has been in the news a lot lately thanks to website glitches and concerning enrollment numbers.

Recently, though, it was on the front page of the Minneapolis Star Tribune for a different reason — its interim CEO, Scott Leitz, was arrested in Minneapolis on suspicion of DWI.

Leitz was arrested in August, but news of this incident was only recently uncovered. The length of time the arrest was kept under wraps was viewed as suspicious by some.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the 47-year-old St. Paul man was pulled over around 2 a.m. near the intersection of Portland Avenue South and South Sixth Street. Allegedly, a breath test showed that he had a blood-alcohol content level of 0.18. In all 50 states, the legal limit to drive is 0.08.

Leitz issued a statement Friday, March 28, saying: “I consider this one of the biggest mistakes I’ve ever made. It’s humiliating, and as with any mistake, I will learn from it and not repeat it.” MNsure’s board of directors indicated to reporters that it was aware of the DWI arrest when it hired Leitz in December.

What we take from this story is that even responsible, high-ranking people — people who can be trusted to perform complicated, important jobs — can get into trouble when they mix alcohol and driving. It’s a mistake, certainly, but it’s a very common one.
