Minneapolis Criminal Defense Lawyer Says Keep Your Composure

A chance encounter and clash of tempers that resulted in a homicide has concluded with the sentencing of a St Paul man to a life term in prison. The victim, Jeffery Elling, and his girlfriend were nearly struck by a car while out for a walk early last autumn. The near-miss led to a shoving match between Mr. Elling and the driver of the car, Aloeng Vang, age 19.

In the case presented by Ramsey County Attorneys, Mr. Vang was portrayed as intent on revenge after having been shoved to the ground and humiliated during the confrontation with Mr. Elling. According to prosecutors, Mr. Vang returned with a gun in the pre-dawn hours of September 1 and twice shot Mr. Elling from ambush after ringing the victim’s doorbell.

District Judge Diane Alshouse called the incident “a senseless killing” before sentencing Mr. Vang to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

This case illustrates how actions can sometimes escalate, leading to unforeseen and tragic consequences. Our justice system was established with the intent to offer a fair and impartial hearing to each party to a dispute while insuring the safety of all involved. When tempers flare, even when justified, take a breath and think things through.
