In an earlier post, we wrote about a high-speed chase in Woodbury that resulted from police officers’ and state troopers’ attempts to find an alleged drunk driver.

Recently, a St. Paul man was charged with two felonies after a somewhat similar high-speed chase went tragically and fatally wrong.

The 34-year-old man has been charged with two counts of fleeing an officer resulting in injury or death because in mid-September, he struck a vehicle after trying to elude a police officer in downtown Minneapolis for an estimated three minutes.

A 24-year-old Wisconsin man died in the crash, and his 20-year-old Stillwater passenger was gravely harmed, according to the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram.

The man was fleeing because he allegedly had a suspended license and a 0.16 BAC. Initially, he came to the attention of the officer who pursued him because he was allegedly speeding.

Reportedly, the man ran red lights and crashed through bushes in the high-speed chase. As we commented in the post on the Woodbury high-speed chase, incidents like this lead some to question whether high-speed chases are ever worth the damage they sometimes cause, or whether there are smarter and equally effective ways of apprehending suspects.

As a Minneapolis DWI lawyer, I am available to help clients who have been charged with driving while intoxicated and do not know what to do next. These charges are frightening and the criminal justice system can be intimidating; working with an attorney often helps overcome these emotions.
