Police in Crystal believe that a vehicle that rammed into a police car one Saturday night in early December was being driven by a drunk driver.

Details on the incident are scant, but WCCO reports that the accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of County Road 81 and 62nd Street.

Evidently, there were four people in the vehicle that struck the Crystal Police squad car. The police officer inside the squad car was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation and was released, apparently without significant injury. It does not seem anyone in the vehicle of four people was harmed.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s office is said to be determining whether charges are appropriate.

In WCCO’s story on this incident, we see no mention of what led police to believe that the driver of the other car was drunk. It is very important that terms like “drunk driver” not get thrown around casually. The legal consequences of a DWI conviction are very severe, and accused people have rights; they don’t deserve to be labeled as anything without it first being proven.
